Description

A fine example of the series of historical biographies published by the house Goupil & C.ie between the 19th and 20th centuries, illustrated by 49 full-page or nt engravings, the first in front, in color or b / w, engraved and printed by Jean Boussod, Manzi, Joyante & C.ie. Edition of 1000 copies, but ours is part of a limited edition of 200 copies on Papier des Manufactures Impériales du Japon accompanied by a suite of planches in bistro (copy no. LXXXV), originally in a separate folder, in our bound copy in the text to duplicate the present engravings. Our specimen is further embellished by an illustrious provenance: as evidenced by the beautiful Ex Libris of Prince Constantin Radziwill and the gold coat of arms on the back, it comes from the library of the Chateau d'Ermenonville, historic home of the Marquis De Girardin family, famous for having been the scene of the death of the philosopher Rousseau, who was later buried in the park of the castle; sold at auction on 8 October 1878, the castle had been bought by Marie-Charlotte Hensel, widow of the wealthy businessman Francois Blanc, and given as a dowry to his daughter Louise, wife of our Prince Constantin Radziwill. The couple's son, Leon, was a friend of Marcel Proust and the main model for the figure of Robert de Saint-Loup in the Recherche
