Description

One of the first English pirate editions of the great and unexpected bestseller (300,000 copies in less than a year) Uncle Tom's Cabin published the same year as the first American edition. The novel was initially published in weekly installments in the magazine The National Era from June 5, 1851 to April 1, 1852, with the original subtitle "The Man That Was a Thing", soon changed to "Life Among the Lowly". The first edition in book form appeared on March 20, 1852 by the publisher John P. Jewett with an initial print run of 5,000 copies. The enormous success of the novel immediately triggered the release of numerous pirate editions. Our copy was published by Partridge & Oakey in 1852 with an edition illustrated with 16 engraved plates by Johnston, an introduction by the philanthropist and pacifist Elihu Burritt and the indication on the title page "Verbatim from the American edition". The beautiful illustrated editorial binding has been preserved, although worn by time.
