Description
Curious little poem that narrates the invention of Maccheroni by Pulcinella. The occasion of the composition, as indicated in the publisher's dedication to Girolamo Savorgnan, is the celebrations relating to another gastronomic specialty, the Festa de' Gnocchi in Verona, which since 1531 has been celebrated on the last Friday of Lent (hence the name of Friday gnoccolàr). In the poem, macaroni is presented as a healthy alternative to "zucchetti, fricassee, cakes, pastilles", its evolution is underlined that from hand-rolled pasta "now the press squeezes it, and in more than twelve / different shapes every banquet beano”, boasts of its exportation all over the world (“Puglia and Liguria will tell you if you land / Foreign wood from all over the vast ocean, / which, abandoning the Italian coasts, / with this commodity in its sen does not rival it”: Already then, Italian gastronomic excellences were conquering the market... ). And then, he concludes, "Drugs, which deprive of life, die / and Macaroni lives eternally"
