Half-leather binding with gold titles and friezes on the spines and marbled plates: peeling on the spines, on the caps, on the hinges, on the paper covering of the plates, on the edges of the plates; external corners of the plates dented and missing the paper covering. Dirty cuts with traces of dust. Binding of many notebooks loose. Signatures belonging to the endpaper of the vols. 1, 2 and 6. Slightly browned papers with scattered blooms and brown spots located especially along the margins. Ancient handwritten ownership note on the rear endpaper of volume 6.

Pirated edition published in Brussels of Chateaubriand's biography the same year as the first Paris edition by the Penaud brothers. The first part of the Mémoires appeared in 1848 in the Parisian magazine La Presse and then corrected by the author upon publication in volume: in the Belgian edition the text is that of the magazine
