Description
In 1747, three editions of the Latin poem by Melchior de Polignac entitled Anti-Lucretius were published simultaneously in Paris: published posthumously and completed by Abbot Rothelin and Professor Lebeau, the poem presents itself as a Christian refutation of De Rerum Natura of Lucretius in response to the contemporary doctrines of the philosopher Pierre Bayle. The poem enjoyed considerable success and many re-editions both in Latin and in translation. This edition is accompanied by a beautiful portrait of the Author on the frontispiece (drawn by H. Rigaud and engraved by J. Daulle) and by elegant headpieces and finials engraved in copper, one for each book of the poem.
