La costruzione di una cattedrale non affronta solo problematiche simboliche o architettoniche, ma riguarda arti e mestieri diversi: vetrate, sculture, affreschi, mosaici coinvolgono artisti e maestri che viaggiano per tutta l'Europa. Nel volume sono prese in esame 36 cattedrali sedi vescovili, in una sequenza di tavole.
